There are several effective methods for creating an underpainting, with the three most popular being Verdaccio, Grisaille, Imprimatura or otherwise known as Bistre.
In this workshop, we will focus on the Imprimatura method, often referred to as the “wipe-out method.” This technique involves painting a burnt umber glaze over a white canvas or board, then skillfully ‘wiping out’ areas to reveal the highlights beneath. Shadows are built up using opaque paint, while half-tones are added with a touch of colour on the brush, allowing the warmth of the burnt umber to shine through the translucent glaze.
Imprimatura is particularly appealing due to its simplicity, looseness, and warmth. The effect of a translucent burnt umber glaze against a white background creates a warm, glowing ambiance, in contrast to the cooler Grisaille technique, which mixes black and white and can sometimes result in a lifeless appearance.
Join us to explore the vibrant world of Imprimatura and unlock its unique charm!
