One of Sargent’s most celebrated masterpieces, Lady Agnew’s portrait captures her confident gaze and relaxed posture—qualities rarely seen in contemporary portraiture of the time. The spontaneous feel is heightened by Sargent’s fluid, sweeping brushwork, bringing her to life on the canvas. When exhibited at the Royal Academy in London in 1893, the painting became an instant sensation.
The Workshop
In this workshop, we’ll be working with Sargent’s carefully chosen palette. Known for experimenting with pigments, Sargent used a range of colours and medium to achieve his signature depth of flesh.
We’ll kick off with an engaging talk on colour theory to lay the foundation for a dynamic painting session. Louis will then demonstrate techniques to match tonal values, blend colours seamlessly, and build rich depth into your artwork. Alongside class lessons, each student will enjoy personalised instruction and critiques, helping you refine your skills and bring your paintings to life.
Grisaille underpainting
We will be working on top of a black and white underpainting pre-printed onto canvas. Don’t worry if your a beginner the drawing is already done. We will learn how to draw on future courses.
Beginners and experienced people are welcome. Understanding is key and nobody gets left behind. Each student will be helped until they grasp the principles of the lesson. Louis will be demonstrating each step in front of the group and on students work if needed.
Louis Smith studied Classical Art in Florence and has exhibited his work in the BP Portrait Award and Royal Society of Portrait Painters.
